Potted trees can be a great addition to a patio or terrace. If you have limited space or don’t have a yard, a potted tree can make your small outdoor living area feel like a garden. Here are the five best trees for patios.
1. Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) Japanese maples are a popular container plant with delicate red-purple leaves. They require little pruning and are naturally small, growing to a height of around 4.5 metres. These trees enjoy sunny areas but are susceptible to wind damage, so place your potted Japanese maple in a sheltered spot. 2. Conifers You can plant trees such as junipers, pines, firs and cypresses in pots to give your outdoor space some year-round greenery. A small pine tree can be kept in a container for years with frequent pruning. Make sure to use well-draining soil and place the tree in a sunny spot. 3. Citrus There are many types of citrus trees you can grow in a container. Lemons, limes, kumquats and tangerines can add an exotic, tropical feel to your patio. They may even bear fruit. Citrus trees require nitrogen, so supplement watering with an organic fertilizer. To protect them from the frost, you’ll have to bring your citrus trees indoors for the winter. 4. Ficus (Ficus benjamina) Also known as weeping figs, ficus trees are native to tropical climates but are also a popular Canadian house plant. Their deep green, shiny leaves and twisty trunks make for an eye-catching addition to any space. They’ll thrive outdoors in summer and transition well indoors in winter with no ill effects. 5. Olive (Olea europaea) These Mediterranean trees are perfect for containers. Use terracotta pots and give your patio a Spanish or Italian/Roman theme. Olive trees have naturally shallow roots and can live in a container for many years if properly cared for. Look for a variety called “Swan Hill,” if you don’t want to clean up the fruit.
